When did returnable beer bottles stop?

People were used to getting their beer in heavy bottles that had a few scrapes and worn spots. But with the advent of lighter “no deposit, no return” bottles and cans, returnables fell out of favor. By 1981, only about 12 percent of beer in the U.S. was sold that way, and that fell to 2 percent by 2001.
